I was impressed by the quiet efficiency, kindness and utmost professionalism shown to me. I came for a knee replacement as the hospital in Vigo was recommended to me. In the UK I had to wait two years. Or go private with minimal care. What I received was a full medical, complete x-ray, blood tests and physical examination. This was the Wednesday before the operation which would take place the next Monday. I was accompanied by Mausa who served as translator and guide and informer. What she could not translate she used a translator. The day of the operation I was admitted and helped by Mausa who had more than enough on her plate, yet she still helped me overcome potential obstacles. At no time did I have to wait or need to ask for help. In the theatre again everything was explained and the efficiency and professionalism and care was faultless. I woke up and I had no pain as explained by the anaesthetist but he promised me 12 to 15 hours pain relieve. The operation was a success considering the damage and the extent of the lesions in the joint and the tissue around it. Again I went for x-rays to make sure all is well. The surgeon visited me twice in the recovery room. I had a good night's sleep having been warned that the next couple of days would be difficult. It was. I had good nurses who checked up on me regularly. The next two days was difficult but manageable, again an excellent nursing team who looked after me, two visits by the surgeon, and a traumatologist. The physiotherapist who did the rehabilitation which started the Tuesday was a no-nonsense guy, Brais, who was great. I remained in hospital for an extra two days and had continuous rehab for another 10 days. I have no complaints about the service, the operation, the post-operation care and the support I had from all. The hospital Gestora Personal de Salud, Paula and Mausa, made sure that I and the other patients had care that was provided smoothly without any red tape usually found in hospitals. The hospital was busy and not surprising as the quality of service is superior to any I have received or seen, cleanliness, hygiene and care, real honest human kindness and empathy.

Professional courtesy prevents me from writing about the surgical team, the orthopaedic surgeon, traumatologist and the anaesthetist I was scared when I went in. The problem with my knee was long standing and prevented me from walking or doing much, but what if it came out worse because there was some real soft tissue damage as well. Their concern and assurances soon made my fears banal I left the hospital with a new knee and really a second chance to enjoy life again
